Slightly?? There's not a hope in hell of a "slight" comparison with Doom3. That's deep nVidia territory. On Doom 3, Nvidia 6800 gets the edge slightly on benchmarks I've seen
6600GT or X700XT. Or if you want something like the ASUS V9999GE (6800NU)ok, so if there both in the same realm of preformance, which one is a better value. I don't need any top of the line stuff, just something that would let me play modern games on medium-high settings, and I don't want to spend like $500 on a card when theres a $250 card out there that will get me good performance on games for years to come

Naturally the 6800is the NVIDIA 6800 256 MB series better than the ATI Radeon X800 256 MB series. If anyone knows which one gets better fps on, say, Doom 3 maximum settings
You've got to be kidding me right? Have a look at http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2146&p=3 --- its not a slight edge.On Doom 3, Nvidia 6800 gets the edge slightly on benchmarks I've seen, but thats not to sy the X800 slows down any
Again its not a slight edge (although nowhere near as punishing as Doom3 but that's because HL2 is CPU bound)Saying that, the X800 seems to have the edge on Half Life 2.
Yes but the cards being compared are clear: 6800 256MB and X800 256MB (and there are only a few 256MB 6800s)It also depends on what version of the cards you're comparing ie. the top versions are the pro or ultra, with the lowest versions being the LE or SE.
Dont buy based on a few silly numbers for a specific game or two (unless thats all you plan on playing)There are many X800's with 256 mb, and there are several 6800's with 256. A 6800gt will outperform a x800 pro in any game and the 6800gt will outperform the x850xt pe in doom 3
Excellent question: if you are comfortable with modding the video card, probably the X800 would give more value as it is more easily unlocked. As for the 256MB 6800 there's only one or two such cards (to my knowledge) so selection is somewhat limitedok, so if there both in the same realm of preformance, which one is a better value.
It appears ive already replied to thisQuote:

The only thing you really need to upgrade is the video card, anything X700/6600 series and up will work although id personally limit that to X700XT/6600GT and upSay I was gonna play Half Life 2 on medium settings, would I need to upgrade to a better card with my NVIDIA FX5500, or could I stay with wat I got. (I have solid specs on the other major categories, 512MB of Ram, Athlon 3300+)
