Video Card Rec and DisplayPort Explanation

Hi there,

I am in the market for a new video card--actually building an entirely new computer--and was wondering if you guys could assist me with some questions. The computer will be my DAW and I would like to have three monitors hooked up to it.

I asked my audio engineering buddies and they suggested the ATI HD57XX series or just getting another one of what I have now: an old ass 6200 TurboCache... something like that. However, I do like to play the occasional game and with the power I am putting into the comp, the temptation is there. Therefore, I am looking at something like an HD57XX.

I guess I can use the (2) VGA and the DisplayPort to run the three monitors, but I thought I read somewhere that to have the DisplayPort run as an extended dekstop, and not just duplicate one of the screens, I'd need some expensive adapter.

Is this true?

The HD5750 was about the cheapest I could find to run this: any other suggestions? (The only newer games I might try out are Unreal 3, BioShock, FFXIV, Dragon Age, SupCom)

Would like to just stick with one card.

Thanks,

Uro

the 5750 should work for eyefinity but be warned: it probably won't perform very well even with older games like those. depending on the monitors you get (what resolution are they?) you probably won't be able to play above low, maybe medium settings. running eyefinity really takes a toll on the performance. i would suggest sticking with at least a 5770 if you plan on doing a fair amount of gaming using eyefinity. however, if you just want a big desktop and don't really plan on gaming much and/or don't care about the quality (settings) then go ahead and stick with the 5750.

for the adapter, you can get a cheaper $20 or $30 one, but you'll have to settle for an analog signal on that monitor (which isn't a very big deal if it is one of the side monitors). the others can be digital though. i'll try to find the one that i have (that works perfectly) for you so you don't have to go through a trial and error process with some other adapters :P

Thanks!

I already have two Acer AL1916W's monitors so I am going to add a third. I usually use one most of the time unless I am mixing then I use both. I keep the single one at 1440x900. The three monitors would mostly be for this purpose.

As far as gaming I'd probably just use one or two. Depends on how much I'd have to sacrifice as far as quality because I do have to have that when I am gaming.

Thanks,

Uro

oh so would they be different resolutions? eyefinity will only "work" with one resolution. by that i mean it will only run each monitor at the same resolution. so if you had 2 1440x900 monitors and say a 1920x1080 one, you'd either have to have the 1920x1080 one run at 1440x900 or have the 1440x900 ones run at 1920x1080 (either way, you'd get a weird looking picture). but, if you wanted to simply run three monitors at the same, you could definitely mix the resolutions and run each one at the resolution the are meant to run at. that way you could just use one of them for gaming too ;)

All three would be at 1440x900, but the only time I'd be using all three is when I'm doing music. Games would just be the one or two monitors at 1440x900.

So would any DisplayPort to VGA adapter work?

no, not any will work. ati wants you to buy the $100 "active" ones, which will allow you to use the monitor with a digital signal, but you can get by with some of the "passive" ones, which let you use some adapter and an analog signal (rgb).

EDIT: here is one that should work:

i haven't personally tried but there have been many reviews saying it work with eyefinity. it only supports up to like 1920x1200 but you monitor will only be 144x900 so you'll be fine.
