Video Card Shutting Off

I have a problem with my video losing connection. My computer and monitor don't lose power, but infact my computer keeps runing. It's almost as though my pc is trying to go to sleep, but I can't wake it up. I'm on my second video card now cause after so many times of shutting itself off, it stopped working and I had to replace it.

Does anyone have/or had this same issue before??

It starts at about a month. Then a couple weeks, to a week or so. Basically gets less and less. Last card eventually got to the point where it didn't come back on at all. I also loose audio when it goes out.

Ensure you have the latest motherboard bios. Sleep profiles, PCIe power etc can be buggy with older bios versions. Onthat note, please post your exact motherboard model.

To check the psu, get yourself a multimeter, set it to DC 12V and on one of the spare molex connectors, connect it to the yellow (12V+) and black (ground) wires. Download 3DMark and run it. While it runs monitor the 12V rail. Needs to stay within +/-5%. That is +11.40 V to +12.60 V. A lot of multimeters (even the cheap ones) will allow you to show a min and max value.

If the PSU is not up to scratch it will drop below 12V. A little way is fine, below 11.4V is not. Given the load and the GPU, i wouldn't expect it to go below 11.8 to be honest.

But in the meantime, ensure you have:

  1. Latest drivers for the GPU
  2. Latest motherboard BIOS
  3. Latest DirectX
  4. Turn off sleep in Windows (to ensure that is not affecting it)
  5. Ensure correct BIOS settings for sleep etc
  6. Ensure motherboard is defaulting to PCIe graphics
