Video card sound quality

is the sound quality of a video card through hdmi any good? is it at least better than the on-board audio? My card is an HIS HD 6770. My onboard audio can't output surround sound into anything useful so i have to either get a dedicated sound card or get surround through the video card.
Thanks!

Never tried it, but hey, they'd be hard pressed to make audio worse than Realtek on board. A dedicated sound card is the way to go though.

I use Geforce GT 520 it has the fifth generation of PureVideo HD, has great performance when decoding H.264, VC-1 and MPEG-2 codecs and TrueHD and DTS-HD Audio Bitstreaming Support.

I have an ATi Radeon 5770 HD graphics card, and I use my hdmi cable from my xbox. Works great, and sounds even better. My monitor isn't anything to brag about, but the sound output is very good. Also, I haven't ran into any problems with it either. The surround through the video card with be just as good, and for a cheaper price than buying a dedicated sound card for just the cost of an hdmi cable. Hope this helps!
