Video Card Specs

hi, i see people asking which video card is good or which video card to choose and i was wondering what people are basing this on?

i read that the ram was not that important, but the pixel pipelines and the processor speed is more important. Is this what i should be looking for to compare video cards? If so, where can i find this information since they don't usually advertise this information?

thx

You don't really need to get that technical when choosing a video card. Just tell me what you want to use it for and we can help you pick out great video cards for a budget. Although the video card in your signature is already pretty good.

But if you insist, the RAM doesn't matter that much, although you really want a 256MB card at least nowadays as 128MB are going to start being considered old age. Pixel Pipelines, get 12-16 for some good graphical performance. GPU speed is pretty important so yes I would definitely use that to compare video cards.

True, although there isn't that much difference between DDR and GDDR3, Either way you can go for 128mb and you will be fine, but if you want to get ready for the future get a 256MB so you don't have to upgrade so quickly.

If your not doing anything demanding with graphics i wouldnt worry about pixel pipelines i would worry more about the clock speed or the amount of memory the card has

clarification

thx for all the answers

actually i was trying to figure out if its actually possible to get an upgrade for my sister's computer for under 100cdn

she runs a Sapphire Radeon 9200se (AGP)

here's her computer specs btw

P4 2.6
1024 DDR400
Sapphire Radeion 9200se
120gb SATA

A game she is trying to play (FLYFF) has these requirements:

Standard System
PentiumIII 800MHZ
128MB
Geforce 2mx 200

Recommended System

PentiumIII 1G
256MB
Geforce 3 Ti 200

but the graphics are not smooth and its "jaggedy"
someone i asked suggested that it might be the video card lacking. true?

i also tried to OC her video card, but gives some error message after a while, so i'm not sure if it needs a fan (heat problem), because it comes with a heat sink only stock.

GDDR3 is faster.

To play the latest games, you really should have a 256MB card, but if tou want to play some of the newer games that will be coming out soon at ultra settings, you should go with a 512MB version.

Now dont think that any 512MB card is good, im saying a card such as the 7900GTX 512MB would be an excellent card if you want to play future games on ultra settings.

You have to take in all of the factors. Clocks aren't anything. (practically) no matter how fast a 4 pixelpipeline card is, it won't be faster than a 12 pixelpipeline card. There isn't one single factor that matters more than the rest:

Pixelpipelines
Core and memory clocks
Memory type
Memory size
Memory interface
Interface (AGP/PCIx16/PCI)

is the one that i wrote on my signature good? i just bougth it over the internet

@DSM1999 the thread hijacker: Yes.
@a123: Chaintech 6200 is good. And it has a pic of a hot girl on the box.

sorry if i hijacked the thread but i didnt want to start a new thread just for that.
and its good to know that the videocard i just got is good

thanks

core speed, memory speed, pipelines, and ram 128mb ggr3 is good so dont matter
agreed... but vertex shaders matter too, don't forget the x1900xt and x1900xtx are top of the line cards because they have 48 vertex shaders, whereas the 7900gtx (another top of the line card) only has 8.
don't mean to confuse you or anything...
but basically we base our analysis off of benchmarks that we find from other websites... like anandtech and tomshardware.com
first, there the type of memory, ddr, ddr2, and ddr3, sometimes added with a "g" that stands for graphics. basically this will effect the clockspeed of the memory.
then, theres core speed, or core clock frequency.
then, there core structure which would include pixel pipelines and vertex shaders (more of those = better)
then, there's software that they support... like new lighting effects that nvidia would add to the 7 series that the 6 series didn't support.
also, make sure the memory is 256-bit. if its 128-bit that could cripple performance by alot, but sometimes (like the 7600gt) it doesn't make a huge difference. if its 64-bit, then it's not worth it.

the 6200 won't get respectable FPS in any game really. meaning it will lag, unless all you're playing is like CS:Source or something.... no newer games really though.
i definitely would've rather buy my 7800gt... :P lol
