video cards and drivers

I have a Win XP platform running a GeForce 5500 FX (I know its a really old card but I am fine with it for now, going to replace it with a 6200GT soon (another cheap card but suits my requirements fine)). My video editing software complains I have very old drivers and I want to update my drivers to achieve maximum peformance.

Is it very hard to update drivers? How do I do it (after i download)?

I don't want to break my computer so I really need to know what I'm doing before I do it.
