Video crashes when viewing JPEG files

Over the past month or so, I've been crashing when viewing JPEGs with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. My entire system will hang, then I'll get one of three results:

1. Screen goes black and the system reboots by itself
2. Screen goes black and the system hangs, needing a manual reset
3. The screen will come back, with a message box popup:

VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator as
it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands.

Please tell AMD about this problem.

The generated error report contains only system information such as driver version, AGP settings, graphics frame buffer size, etc. that will be used to analyze the problem. This report will be treated as anonymous.

Send Error Report - Don't Send

(Sending the error report is useless as it just gets bounced back by my ISP)

This started with the version 12.1 and 12.2 Catalyst suite. I used Driver Sweeper and installed video drivers as far back as version 11.8 (which used to work just fine) with no improvement.

Then, in Event Viewer, under ACEEventLog, there are four entries:

Clicking on that link points to .NET Framework 2.0 issues. I ran the .NET Framework Setup Verification Utility, and all the Frameworks on my PC - 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 - all verify as installed properly.

I set my BIOS to share 128MB of RAM for video use. My video is AMD integrated HD4250 graphics using a D-sub analog output. XP Home SP3 is fully patched, too.

Any help here, guys?

For some reason, this is a very common issue with XP drivers for ati cards. It did this when I updated my 3870 past drivers dated October 2009. It also does this on 2 builds I did for clients that has the integrated 4250 video. Install an older set of drivers and see if it stops. Even with fresh installs and installing the latest drivers. Was never able to understand why this happens. You may be forced to go back to the ones dated october 2009 here.

Got it, John. Thanks. I'll download it now and give it a try in the morning. :)
This also tells me that when I finally upgrade to a discrete video card, it will be nVidia powered. When I had an FX 5200, I never had any trouble, ever.

Okay, I just spent two hours trying to get older drivers to work.

Uninstalling the v11.8 drivers and using Driver Sweeper left my Registry so corrupted and damaged that neither v9.10 or v11.8 worked... the driver would "install" but there was no video adapter found in Device Manager, VGA default drivers were in use, and there was no video acceleration at all.

I ended up using Macrium Reflect to restore my boot partition with the image I made on March 29 with v11.8.

So 11.8 works flawlessly? I may try upgrading my clients drivers to that version if so.

I actually thing it has something to do with the 3000 and 4000 cards, as I ended up getting a 5770 and was able to install the latest drivers with no issue. Also, the issue doesn't not happen in windows 7. So its something with XP and certain drivers.

No, 11.8 doesn't work flawlessly. It's the version I had reverted to that was earlier than version 12.x, and the first suite I'd installed when I built this rig in October 2011.

I've installed v12.3 (just released 3/28/12) and have yet to "torture test" it with JPEGs.

UPDATE:
It would appear that the very latest Catalyst Suite 12.3 - released on 28 March, just 21 days after the 12.2 Suite - seems to have finally solved this issue. I can't make this crash even trying hard. So.. hopefully this is solved. :)
