Video display area shrinks after monitor comes out of sleep mode

The video display area on my monitor shrinks when the monitor comes out of sleep mode. By shrinks, I mean it no longer covers all of the available display area: at 1024x768, about an inch along the right side and top (IIRC) is empty black space. To fix this, I usually bump up the screen resolution and switch back to 1024x768. If the first switch doesn't work the second and on rare occasions a third will fix the problem. Naturally, I'm tired of doing this.

I've recently upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP. The problem occurred occasionally in Windows 2000, but in XP it occurs nearly every time the monitor goes to sleep--I have the monitor set to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity using Window's Power Settings.

The problem has occurred with at least 3 different video cards and motherboards. In fact, everything but the monitor has been changed at some point in the time that the problem has occurred. Kinda points to the monitor, I guess. I've had it since '97, when I bought my uber $4,000 Dell 300MHz PII system, lol.

Anyhoo, here's what I'm using now:

Abit NF7-S2 mobo
AMD Athlon XP 3000+
1GB RAM, 500MB Kingston-500MB Mushkin
Asus ATI Radeon 9600SE
Dell 1025HT monitor

Thanks for looking,

Just guessing but I dont think your monitor likes the hibernate option. Consider turning this feature off and just have a screensaver run. Also instead of switching resolution back and forth like that try to stretch your screen to fit the desktop in your monitors options and see if it does this next time your computer goes into hibernate state.

I resized the display area after it came out of sleep mode, and it hasn't shrunk itself yet. It has changed sizes slightly every time, but not anything like what it was doing. Thanks for the advice.

Glad it helped it even just a little. Welcome to the forums and hope you find it helpfull.
