video editing freeware

I have sony vegas 7 but it doesn't work with vista. I also have the last 2 versions of roxio but they don't fit my requirements in audio editing. Before buying another program I can't use I'd like reccdomendations. I want to video/audio record birds by setting up camcorder for long periods of time. I then would edit out all the non active parts. That means I need to look at a full length display of video and audio spectrun symultaniously so I won't have to sit through hours of dead time. Also i'm wondering if there might be freeware, i've already spent a small fortune on commercial versions I can't use.

Its a little bit better than Windows Movie Maker, which is already on your computer. You can go onto youtube and look Up "Sony Vegas Portable" or "Adobe Premiere Pro cs3 Portable"
