Video Editing On OS X?

Ok so my friend is looking into purchasing some video editing software for OS X.
Im trying to work out what would be best for him.
Now so far Final Cut Express 4 is the best that ive seen.

He would be making small movies, basically piecing together footage.
Sorta like what you would do in Windows Movie Maker, except he wants something a little more advanced. But not like a total professional program that would be really expensive and that would take a while to learn how to use.

So would Final Cut Express 4 be the best option?

USD$500 is sorta the budget, however id expect there would be lots of great software for less. If there is something that isnt that much over $500 and would be worth it then please mention it as well.

Thankyou for your thoughts :)

Final Cut Express is a program for professionals. You should try iMovie or how they call it..it should be bundled in the operating system, so no need to download/purchase it.

Premiere Pro from Adobe is for both mac and pc. You can give it a try.
Or use Final Cut Pro which is most used video editor for mac.

FCP is the best and cheapest solution. you can now get Premiere CS3 for mac but PPRO is a bit crap! fcp!

or you could dual boot with Xp and use dony vegas or... Avid but its top dollar and everyone rates FCP! :)

Well Final Cut Express is the same as Pro except with alot of the professional tools taken out, its aimed at more amateur stuff. Which seems perfect to me.
I was also considering Premiere Pro. Ill put both to him and see what he prefers.

I use Final Cut Express 4 and it is fine. If he uses mac he should stick with apple editing and not adobe editing unless its after effects. If he wants final cut pro thats what FCE is expect unless he wants motion, sound mixer etc.

Thankyou killbill. Is it possible to get FCP without the studio package? I cant find it separate on the apple website.
But yeah it looks like FCE4 is the way to go.

Final Cut Express is final cut pro they just call it pro in studio as it can work together with motion etc

Just out of interest. Is it possible to get iMovie outside of iLife? or do you have to buy the whole package?

If your friend is a student he can qualify for an educational discount. Which is ridiculous, I think it prices Final Cut Studio at like $300 per a license.

Hmmm, well he is sorta wanting Final Cut Express, however he would actually like to try iMovie first just to see if it suits his needs properly.
So will it only come with iLife?
