Windows Movie Maker might work for you depending on what you want to do.

choose one, But i still think that Movie maker 2 is better than all other free software.

if you want a trial version of a program then choose Adobe aftereffects for effects and Adobe Premier for editing.

Get the trial for premier pro, it rocks. Extremely powerful program and not that hard to use (for the basic stuff).
