Video Editing Software Recommendations

I need a Video Editing application which will allow me to take existing video files on my comp and do things to them, like adding music of my choice or cutting scenes and mixing them with others, things like that.

It would also be helpful to just grab video clips from DVDs. I have a DVD drive but no burner, so I don't know how easy that would be.

Any recommendations or suggestions on where to look?

nikhilcool17, the quality of Movie Maker can be decent if you use the right settings. Main problem is it only saves as wmv. It's OK for learning some of the basics before committing to spending money. You then better know what to look for.

SLLAB02, without a burner you are in doo doo. Video takes a lot of disk space. You must have some means of storing off your pc. Most people burn to media or data dvds. Dvd burners are dirt cheap these days.

There is freeware out there. I've not listed anything until you've indicated whether you want to go "on the cheap". Payware tends to be easier to use. Price range is large. Premiere Pro and Sony Vegas are expensive. At the lower end are a number of apps. These are geared toward making dvds but also do straight video editing:
Sonic/Roxio MyDVD
Ulead Vstudio
Pinnacle Studio

Re grabbing clips from dvds, if you are referring to movie dvds that require decrypting, we cannot discuss that here. For home movie dvds etc it's not difficult to get into editable format.
