Video/picture editing? programs?

Hi,
I've been working on a project for fun, and the resolution doesn't turn out well in the final product. What is the best file format to save images in. Is there some good free programs that I can use. currently I'm using OpenOffice.org, Gimp, and Windows Movie Maker. Is there any programs out there that can help with the resolution etc.?
Google
Thanks and please watch some of the video to understand where I'm coming from.
Thanks,
JTM

If you are using OpenOffice.org and the Gimp, the poor results must be due to the way you are using them, or the format of the project. I have not used Draw in OpenOffice (tried Gimp a long time ago). Both should give images acceptable to anyone.

Taking common formats like jpeg or bmp, the resolution can be whatever you like but it is limited by the source of the image and what size and quality you are displaying at.

Movie Maker is limited in the number of output formats ie wmv but can still produce good quality video.

You need to add some explanation of how the resolution is poor and how the images and video are being presented (slideshow, pdf or word document, movie, or just displaying on your pc).

click on the post above, the google link. See the text, should it look that way, is that good quality?
Thanks,
JTM

Also could you shed some tips on how to get a better looking presentation like the one in my link of my first post. Like how to get better resolution..etc.
thanks

I saw the link was a video and assumed that was just part of the project. I don't download video as I have a modem. After you latest reply I checked and I also have to download the Google player which I'm not going to do.

I'll let someone else respond. If there are no replies in a few days I'll take some guesses.

Starman the video is uploaded on Google Video, the movie should stream, there is no download required for it? But thanks for the help anyway and sorry the video isn't working correctly.

I tried Inept Explorer and Netscape and managed to get some samples with Netscape (FF and IE I don't have setup for video). With a modem you can't really play anything. I took a few screenshots and it was fairly clear what the problems are.

I looked at JTM's Geometry War, the 2m 51sec clip. Can you tell me what size the original is (eg 640x480, 5Mb) and the format (wmv?). Do you know if Google recompresses the video when you upload? I know that if you upload images to Yahoo Groups they compress jpegs to a 400x300 bounding box and about 72% quality.

Trizoy, I'm probably butting in for JTM but if you are displaying in Google, you don't have a lot of choice, it has to be a movie.

Macromedia Captivate is also excellent for presentations. Both slide and avi shows can be turned into swf, avi or exe files. As an exe they run self-contained on any pc and the movie/slide controls are on the edge of the picture. PowerPoint and Captivate both show jpegs at decent resolution because they are showing the jpeg directly rather than an avi of the jpeg.

Yes it does have to be a movie... PPT it crisp, and easy to layout. Can be saved in MANY formats.

Ping JTM, still waiting for response to my question re video size, format etc. You may not go on summer vacation until you comply!
