Video Playback issue

I've had my video card for awhile now, but for some reason it will lag out my pc when it tries to playback anytype of video file through a media program. If I view something off of youtube for example it runs fine. I'm reformating my hard drive (for other reasons) today and if I run into that problem I'd like to try to fix it this time around while I'm not lazy.

The video card: MSI NX6600-VTD256 GeForce 6600 256MB DDR AGP 4X/8X

OS: Windows Xp (hmmm been a few months since I used my home pc I'm not sure which version it is, but I believe its Pro).

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks ^^

So only when it's being veiwed through VLC or windows media player?

Have you checked to see if you have the latest codec pack? Better yet download VLC (free) and see if using that solves the problem.

A different media player will not help I've tried multiple players. I can play live streaming videos fine, I have the most up to date drivers, but it just wont give video playback when going through a media player.

Try 8.4.2.1 versions of the Nvidia drivers.
I had a issue like that with windows media player on my wifes computer with a Nvidia 6200. i reformated it twice and reinstalled new versions of DX and new video drivers. i ended up going back to nvidia version 8.4.2.1 drivers and it worked.
