whenever I try to play video (movies), my laptop screen gets a number of lines on it and it hangs. Every time I have to restart my computer without being able to play anything. Please, can you help me.

i would say there is something seriously gone funny with your graphics card. Unfortunatly, on a laptop, almost all of the time the graphics card is part of the Logic board, so you would have to replace the whole thing. To identify if it is a windows error or not, Download linux http://www.ubuntu.com/ Put it on a memory stick, and boot from the memory stick, (so you dont modify anything on your HD.) Then, once in linux (ubuntu) access the movie and see if the same thing happens, If it does, hardware fault, if it plays fine, then windows has gone crazy and you may need to perform a clean install.

Ill start with a few questions.
1. does the screen show teh lines in anything other than the movie?
2. Have you tried another movie player? (could be a software issue)
3. Have you updated your GPU driver?
4. Have you scanned for maleware?

try the above and we can narrow down the issue.
