Videos are jerky

MoBo: old PCChips M810LR (though I've not been able to confirm exact model)
CPU: AMD athlon 1000MHz
RAM: 512 SDRAM in 2x256
Video: Onboard SiS300 (?16MB)
Playing MPG or WMV files (with WMP) is pretty hopeless. They are very jerky, often with video pausing for several seconds while sound continues. A stand-alone video application (VCD) is much better, but can still be a bit jerky. The CPU activity is 100% with either viewer.
Is the problem likely to be the limited onboard graphics? Other applications run fine, and the PC is clear of viruses/spyware.
Thanks for any comments.

it can be your video card or both that and the cpu. are those hd wmv?

mpg should play fine though.

you may need updated drivers or invest in a decent dedicated graphics.

Thanks for your reply. I found an old ATI Rage XL card in my box of bits - popped it in and there's a huge improvement. Supported by XP, this card works fine. Plays my 'benchmark' HD WMV file with no jerks, and CPU running at about 95%. Also, the monitor display is much sharper!
However wanting to get the best, I found a driver from the ATI website and installed it. Now the performance has slipped down again (slight jerking and CPU at 100%). I can't uninstall the ATI bundle from the control panel - I get a message 'unable to uninstall older or non-ati display drivers'.

Any suggestions?

Update: Thinking about it, I guess the ATI driver listed in control panel is the one windows used. If there is no other ATI driver listed, does that mean that the downloaded bundle has not installed a new driver?

perhaps see if you can find (much) older drivers from Ati somewhere.
because those new drivers are mainly optimized for,. well, about the ati cards of perhaps the past 3 years (at max). :)

That's a good idea. Might take some research.
In the meantime, I have disabled the ATI control panel from the startup. I keep background utilities to a minimum on this low-spec PC. I've also rolled back to WMP9 - I can happily live with that.
Now, my benchmark WMV file plays perfectly with the CPU at less than 50% - sorted.
Thanks!
