I don't know of good software right off for just say your desktop and all, but if you want to record a game, FRAPS is the way to go

Theres a program called Camtasia, you will need to get some warez for it if you want it free though.

I used to play runescape (Yes I know its gay) but Camtasia is the best quality you will get, because your computer cant handle doing anymore.
