Viedo playback problems

Hey I have a 2yr old Compaq 2.2 gig processor 1.5 gigs ram and 256 ram Radeon video card. When ever I try to play a video file on the hard-drive the processor usage shoots up to 100% and the video skips and chirps.. I have no problem with streaming video or audio files.. but it seems when I am playing a file the more sound and action there is on screen, the worse the lag time is.

what media player are you using, what is the format of the file you are trying to play, and where did you get it? It is possible to have avi files that are encoded well, or extremely poorly. If it is messing up on a wide range of files, i would reccomend trying a new player, such a media player classic. Also, when the cup usage shoots up, make sure that the media player is the one using it all, or you might have some bad software that is running a the same time.
