Viewing AVI, XviD, or Divx on TV?

depends on the TV
It depends more on the input used than the TV :P ... Though, I guess only certain TV's have VGA/DVI inputs

But yeah, if you want to play it on your TV, you could use TV out of some sort. If your TV supports it, you can connect either VGA or DVI(usally on newer LCD/Plasma TVs) Older ones just accept RCA/SVHS, and yes, the quality is quite poor. However, it's not too bad with video, just small text. If you do use RCA/SVHS, just drop the resolution down to say 640x480 and it's really not too bad. Realize most DVDs run at 720x480, so the quality of the video won't be much higher.

Also, you could conver the videos to MPEG2 and burn to a DVD or MPEG1 and make a video CD(lower quality on CD-R)

I don't have cable tv so I download a lot of shows. I use VLC media player and it displays perfectly to my tv via s-video.

I have no problems and VLC plays pretty much every format

this is a random comment but is it just a coincedence that Xvid and Divx are just the same but spelled backwards or are they connected

I connect my notebook to my Plasma TV, the quality is superb as plasma/TV resolutions are lower than computer screens (72 dpi)

Divx and Xvid are different kinds of compression, think..
