Violent Video Games

This should be an interesting discussion...

I remember playing Gears of War for the first time - the act of 'chainsawing' another human being/'locust' was probably one of the most graphic things I'd ever seen (at the time).

Games nowadays are getting to a point where graphics & in-game physics make it look so real - can we really only say 'it's just a game!' anymore?

As a result of realistic violence in video games, are we being desensitised to such extremities? Are we losing our morality? I know I can sit through an entire session of Black Ops or GTA4, but someone like my dad couldn't - because he simply sensitive to it. And it's such a contrast when I see 11-year-old kids laughing at pedestrians getting run over in GTA4 - would we react in the same way in real life?

i think we are being decensortised, by video games, i mean i remember stories from my grandad saying people used to jump behind sofas after watching the darleks off doctor who, now they just look silly.

but its the same with music, movies and any other media forms, no one cares about blood and gore anymore and tbh i beleive its a good thing.

people are undoubtbly going to see some horrible stuff throughout there lives, if a violent video game, or movie etc has ensured there not mentally scarred because theyve played games with similar images then so be it.

(plus i love gore ridden games os i may be a bit biased, and hey splattering bystanders on gta is fun as hell- at leats theyre doing it on games and not on the street)

Hopefully you can tell the difference between a video game and reality...
I mean I would laugh in the game or in a movie...because I know its fake... I wouldn't have the same reaction in real life. Not saying I would be scarred, but Im sure I wouldn't laugh if I saw someone get cut in half with a chainsaw.... well that might scar someone, im pretty sure that image would be played over and over in your head.

One of the reasons we enjoy violent things is cause were curious, we want to know what it would look and be like in a situation where you chainsaw someone in two :P. Obviously if that happened in real life you wouldnt be laughing or shouting NOOB or something

I can honestly say I never thought what it would be like to saw someone in half with a chainsaw.

I like B horror movies for the reason I like to see how realistic they can make things look on low budgets and no CG. The days of makeup artists are a thing of the past unfortunately.

This is why games, like movies, have ratings.

11 year olds should not be playing Grand Theft Auto. Unless you want your kids learning how to say some of the stuff on there.

This is also where parenting came in. I grew up watching Conan the Barbarian, Terminator, and all the other iconic violent movies and playing every game around. Never once did I want to go run people over in the street.

In my opinion the old school guys played cops and robbers and play shot at each other. They came closer to the actual acts of violence than kids playing video games, yet these kids also grew up fine.

Most people can distinguish between a game and real life. If you can't and you go and murder someone, it isn't the games fault, it is the user for being a psycho. I have played violent games, but don't want to go and kill someone, I have watched violent films and TV shows, and don't want to kill someone, everyone I know that has also played these games, doesn't want to go and kill someone.

It is escapism, it isn't a learning tool for how to go and murder someone

I totally agree, people always need something or someone to blame, and video games are a perfect target.

If someones intent is to murder someone, they were most likely going to kill someone even before playing a video game

I agree 100%. I play Gears of War, Dead Space, Splinter Cell etc., but never once have I ever wanted to harm someone. Parents will blame their children's bad behavior on video games in a heartbeat, but they only do that because in truth the parent's are at fault not that video game. If someone is going to harm another human being, it isn't because of a game, but rather because the person is truly demented. Cereal killers will kill without the aid of the video game urging them to do so. The bullies will beat up the outsider not because of video games, but because of real life reasons. A virtual game will not effect someone's behavior anymore than a Stephen King novel or a Horror movie.
