Virtual Machine Software

What's the best software for Vista that will let me run XP. I'm unfamiliar with virtual machines, will some let me save data while using the other OS? I need to use XP for compatilbity on some hardware I plan on using on my laptop, and don't feel like formatting and dual booting.

Vmware workstation is good but not free. VMware server is free, but does not have gpu acceleration.
