Virtual memory problem when playing half life 2

I have a dell dimension 8200. It has 256 mb of pc800 RDRAM (bad RAM and a tiny bit of it I know). I also have a crappy vidio card, GeForce 4 mx 440. And a slow procesor 2.0 gigahertz. And a small amount of hrad drive space: 40GB ATA 7200 rpm. When I play half life 2, I often get messages saying virtual memory is too low. But today the framiliar message saying it would be increasing the space didn't come up. And the game runs at 1 frame every 5 seconds :(. Before it ran pretty good. Could it be that my hard drive has to many other things things on it that it doesn't have much room for virtual memory? I haven't checked the available space yet. Will deleting some unused programs solve my memory problem untill I get some more ram? How much ram should I get? I thinking of upgrading to 512 mb, but thats still pretty low. Unfortunetly RDRAM is kinda expensive and hard to find. I will still have a crappy system, but it will let me play half life 2 on all low settings :o . Should I also consider overclocking the cpu? Does the 8200 MOBO suport OCing? If so could someone please show me how? I'm not sure it's a good idea though because if I screw it up my parents will be mad at me and I will not be able to get a new procesor. I know I sound like a complete idiot, if anything I'm saying is incorect , please inform me. :P

I have no other programs runing. Now it says that the program had to delete in an unusal way after a while of gameplay. When I exit, the start menu says it cant show all the icons. I think the preogram is eating eating up all my virtual memory and RAM. But maybe I deleted a game play file when I was making more room on my hard drive to make room for virtual memory, but the game still starts up. I only have 5 gigs of extra space. Could that be the problem? Either way I'm gonna get more RAM and another hard drive untill I get a new computer.
