Virtual Memory

can anyone help me with this problem...below is the exact email i got from my father in law, and i really dont know what to tell him....

Yes for a month now I have been getting that box that says it is increasing the virtual memory. I don't think its actually happening though!
I think the memory issue was only related to Outlook Express. My computer must have lots of Memory! I therefore went through some of the sub files you must have seen on the left of the screen below Inbox, Sent etc. and deleted a lot of old "matter"

It's working OK now but for how long?

My first symptoms of the problem were when I went to Tools / Check Spelling it would not open up, neither would my email address when I clicked on "to".

If it keeps increasing the VIRTUAL memory he probably doesn't have that much PHYSICAL memory. What are the specs of his computer?

seems like u don't have enough physical memories to run those programs. right click on my computer and go to properties it should tell u how much memory u have on the first page anything below 256mb is kinda low, i have 768mb and i never get that message.

I'd say now-a-days anything under 512MB is kinda low... my mom's computer is only running 256 and she gets that message all the time.

use cleaning software like CCleaner to clear out some junk that is not needed... look for spyware cleaning software as well to clean out the junks that spyware create in your comp...

that should be able to free up some more space... provided that your dad already clear out the unused files in there...

The virtual memory is only increased when it gives you that message, it doesnt permanently raise the virtual RAM, which is why he gets it almost all the time he runs that program.

And as others have said, it's most likely because he has too little physical RAM and/or has way too many programs running while using Outlook.

If needed, you can remove the message prompt by making the Page File higher.
Do remember, by default, your pagefile is set to 1.5 times higher than your RAM. It's possible to go up to 3 times your amount of RAM.
Here are the instructions on changing your pagefile:

1. Press Windows Key + Break
- Take note of the amount of RAM -
2. Go to Advanced
3. Click Advanced under Performance
4. Go to Advanced
5. Click Change
6. Change the Initial Size. (NOTE: It's probably currently set to 1.5 times higher as your RAM, as previously mentioned, you can go up to 3 times, however the average is around 2 / 2.5 times.)

Ok I have 2gb of system Memory(RAM). With windows XP what would be my optimal setting for the INITIAL and MAX amount??? I have looked everywhere and can't find a logical answer. Please help!
