the free Virutal PC 2007 is fine for most uses (testing apps). I have an XP VM that I occasionally play with, it works fine.

VMs tend not to play 3D accelerated programs/games (old 2D games that didn't require a graphics card work fine, like Age of Empires). I haven't played around with VMs a whole lot but mostly everything normal works, you can surf the internet and do normal computer work.

By XP VM I mean that I installed Windows XP on a Virtual Machine.

I find VM best for testing progs and light clerical work. I have to remote connect to a VM for work at times and let me tell you mainframe systems and general reference don't have any issues but even internet explorer acts weird on VM. This is just my personal exp. though in a corporate environment.

I use virtual box which is free. I have a Ubuntu Linux VM on my Windows box, for development and testing purposes. That and I don't feel like building a physical box for it.
