VirtualDesktop/External Display?

I'm going to be using my really crappy Dell Inspiron 1525 soon for an easy DJing job.

I'd like to have my DJ Software of choice on my laptop display, and then the virtualization of the audio through another program externally displayed from the laptop through a Proxima, a projector.

How could i manage this? Having one program display externally and one displaying internally on the laptop display?

Which OS? XP, Vista, or 7?
I'll presume XP. Right-click on desktop, click Properties, go to Displays tab, then click Display 2 and check "Extend my desktop onto this monitor" and click Apply. You can then change the resolution on Display 2 to make the area bigger, and reposition the virtual screen around so it's more natural for you-like if the projector screen is above the top of your laptop monitor, put the screen up there, and so forth.
