Virus Help Please

Hi, I am helping a friend with his Hp laptop with Xp media center edition, he has picked up a virus and before giving to me he gave it to a "computer expert" who told him it had so many viruses that he should just throw it away. Really that's what he told him to do. So he gave it back to the owner and now when I turn it on it logs on then loges off before anything can be done.
So first I'd love to get into the computer so I can see whats up, then I'd like to fix it, and then I'd like to tell the "computer expert" that I fixed it.

I would love some help though cause I'm not that good at this.
Looking forward to thanking someone for their help.

Can you access the computer via safe mode? There are a few different ways we can go about this. But let me know if you can access it in safe mode.

Have you tried last known good configuration? If that don't work, do they by chance have recovery console installed or do they have an XP install cd? We can do a system restore from recovery console. Or you can try taking the hard drive out of that system and putting it in a different system and scanning the drive for malware/viruses using a fully updated virus program. You can even scan it using malwarebytes as well. Let me know what you want to do.

I have asked them to find the Windows Cd so I'll wait until tomorrow to see if we can get in using that. So I'll sign off for the night and give you an update tomorrow.
Thanks
Steve

What model of Hp is it? If its not too old, its possible to go on the HP's website and order recovery cd's for it, usually costs lest than 20 bucks.

Hi, it's a Pavillion DV 5000 with XP media Center 2008. Today I tried to go back to the last known good configuration, and system restore, neither worked.
