Virus hides system32 folder

This morning a program was stopped from accessing the internet by my firewall - explorer.exe located in my C:\Windows\System32 folder and after scanning the System32 folder (and eventually the entire computer) I found that 3 files were infected by a virus. The 3 files were explorer.exe, explorer.006 and explorer.007 all locaed in the system32 folder. The virus hid the system32 folder and the only way I could get to it was by typing the address in the Windows Explorer address bar.

I found someone with a similar problem on a forum and downloaded a reg file that made the system32 folder appear again. I also deleted the 3 files manually (from safe mode).

The problem is that after all that and what seems to be a virus free computer now my computer started acting weird. Things like firefox's download manager not recording any dowloads (see my post at :http://www.computerforum.com/53248-firefox-download-manager-problems.html#post392981 ), Spyware Doctor refusing to minimize or turn off although it was responding to everything else, and real player stopped opening completely without so much as an error message. I also recieved an error about 2 files that Norton Antivirus couldn't access (it's own files) because it had no rights to them.

Either the virus is still on my computer or it did some damage before I got rid of it. Anyone have a similar thing happen to them? What can I try? With so many random things going wrong I'm not even sure where to begin.

If I can't fix these problems I will probably just format my computer but it would be nice not to have to do something so drastic.

Thanks

Try turning off System Restore and reboot the computer. Scan again for any virus's. When you feel your system is clean, turn SR back on.

It's evening now and my computer has gone from bad to worse. At shutdown it started going crazy and something is definetly wrong with it. I don't think I have formatted it for a while so it will clear unwanted files and fix the problem. Thanks for the advice though. I'm gonna spend the next couple of days formatting it. Cheers
