i was trying to open up my java program to study at work when i discovered this:

i scanned it with avg, but it said it was clean.
i think i inadvertently coded a infinite loop and it created this; note how it's taking up about 57GB out of my 2GB thumb drive :D

the only folder affected is Ch5, nothing else.
serious bummer dudes :(
 
I can't explain this one. But do a full scan of your system with your flash drive plugged in with malwarebytes and hijackthis and post the logs.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.



Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
 
i did a full scan with malwarebytes; didn't find anything.

meh. i don't see anything in there.
it could just be my usb drive has a bad sector.
i was able to copy everything else off of it onto my laptop.

if i do a long format, will it damage the drive, or is windows smart enough?
 
Should be fine formatting the drive I would think. I've seen issues formatting an sd card though, not formatting the full size of the card.
 
my IS instructor wasn't much help either when i showed her.

i still think it was that infinite loop i wrote... lol :D

at least i got those assignments graded before this happened or i would have had to rewrite all those programs in less than a week.

still pretty interesting.
 
it finished formatting ok, didn't report any problems.
i do need to start backing up more often.

What were you coding in?

Also any chance you encrypted the files, or have software at school/work/home for encryption? There is also the chance that the file system became corrupted. The characters look like ASCII characters, and have me thinking that it probably is the file system table file got corrupted. It stands a chance that depending on formatting you had that flash drive as whether or not you could restore the table file. Sometimes using a program like recuva or others similar may recover the files you created (just not the table file), but not always. If you are still using that flash drive, I'd stop now. I'd trash it and get another one just in the chance that it is on its way out. And yeah, backups are good!

we use JCreator LE for class; had a few .class & .java files there only.
there's no encryption anywhere that i know of.
i saved off the other stuff and put it back after a long format.

personally i hate using usb drives for assignments, but she won't let us use our own machines during class, have to use the classroom desktops. so i have to save and work off the usb drive wherever i go.

kind of hard to keep track of current copies at school, work and my own laptop and usb drive.
