Virus/root kit removal

Hello, as this is my first post on this forum I can only assume this is the correct sections in which to post my inquiry on this particular subject.
To put it bluntly, my computer contracted a virus/bug 3 days or so ago due to my own incompetence and lack of good judgement on my part.
Thankfully I knew I was infected immedietely, and thus I have been able to limit the damage my computer has taken to little/none.
This virus is what I and many others believe to be a key logger, so it's actually a rather serious threat to my system and privacy. If you cannot tell by now, I contracted the skype virus that sprung up about 6 days ago.

When I contracted the key logger, norton believed it to be a safe and secure .exe file. When I discovered that the program was indeed a virus, I scaned my computer with norton but it again did not detect the virus.
So I decided to instead install malwarebytes after I had seen multiple highly rated reviews on it. After I installed and updated malwarebytes, I ran a full system scan. Unlike Norton, Malwareytes DID detect 2 trojan .exe files located in my appdata folder and it quickly qurantined them.

I was fairly confident that the worst had passed, but just to be sure, I googled my issue and some people claimed that while there was indeed a virus in the appdata folder, there also was a "rootkit" worm in my windows registry. I followed their instructions and went to this location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVISION\RUN
In this folder I found multiple folders. All of them linked/were related to legitimate programs such as Skype.exe, Spotify.exe, or Google toolbar. All of them... except for one. There was a folder called Daxkxn that supposedly linked to a Daxkxn.exe file on my adddata folder (There isn't a daxkxn.exe in my appdata folder). This ofcourse was the same region that the virus had installed itself in. There shouldn't even be a .exe file in my appdata folder unless it was virus (which in this case proved correct, Malwarbytes confirmed that both .exe files located in my appdata directory were virus/malware).
My question now becomes, is this daxkxn registry folder/file related to the virus I contracted and if so, is it safe to remove/delete it?

I ask this because while I am familiar with messing around with files in my Local Disk Drive, I do not have experience in altering registry files.

Any help would be appreciated :D

Its a boottime virus. I just got rid of one on someones computer the other day.

You should be able to remove that daxkxn reg but back up the registry first just in case.

You on Windows xp or 7? Removing the virus and repairing the boot should fix the problem.

You could also run a bootime scan with avast and delete the virus if it still sticks around.

Please do the following. Make sure you disable nortons realtime scanning before running.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
  • Download this file here :

    Combofix

  • When the page loads click on the blue combofix download link next to the BleepingComputer Mirror.
  • Save the file to your windows desktop. The combofix icon will look like this when it has downloaded to your desktop.

    cf-icon.jpg
  • We are almost ready to start ComboFix, but before we do so, we need to take some preventative measures so that there are no conflicts with other programs when running ComboFix. At this point you should do the following:

  • Close all open Windows including this one.
  • Close or disable all running Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Instructions on disabling these type of programs can be found here.
Once these two steps have been completed, double-click on the ComboFix icon found on your desktop. Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when ComboFix is running, do not touch your computer at all. The scan could take a while, so please be patient.
  • Please click on I agree on the disclaimer window.
  • ComboFix will now install itself on to your computer. When it is done, a blue screen will appear as shown below.

    cf-preparing.jpg

  • ComboFix is now preparing to run. When it has finished ComboFix will automatically attempt to create a System Restore point so that if any problems occur while using the program you can restore back to your previous configuration. When ComboFix has finished creating the restore point, it will then backup your Windows Registry as shown in the image below.

    erunt.jpg

  • Once the Windows Registry has finished being backed up, ComboFix will attempt to detect if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed. If you already have it installed, you can skip to this section and continue reading. Otherwise you will see the following message as shown below:

    recovery-console-prompt.jpg

  • At the above message box, please click on the Yes button in order for ComboFix to continue. Please follow the steps and instructions given by ComboFix in order to finish the installation of the Recovery Console.
  • Please click on yes in the next window to continue scanning for malware.
  • ComboFix will now disconnect your computer from the Internet, so do not be surprised or concerned if you receive any warnings stating that you are no longer on the Internet. When ComboFix has finished it will automatically restore your Internet connection.
  • ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient.
  • While the program is scanning your computer, it will change your clock format, so do not be concerned when you see this happen. When ComboFix is finished it will restore your clock settings to their previous settings. You will also see the text in the ComboFix window being updated as it goes through the various stages of its scan. An example of this can be seen below.

    still-scanning-clockchanges.jpg

  • When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report.
  • This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
  • When ComboFix has finished, it will automatically close the program and change your clock back to its original format. It will then display the log file automatically for you.
  • Now you just click on the edit menu and click on select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Then come to the forum in your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

Ok So I ran combofix after disabling most of my anti-virus and anti-spyware prgrams, however I had disabled avast before the scan, and Combofix still saw it as active. Hopefully this doesn't/won't affect the scans results too much.
First the Combofix readout:

I don't have time right now to go through the logs but for right now, you need to uninstall a few things. You can't have 2 virus programs installed at the same time. Please remove one of them. I would suggest uninstalling nortons and keeping avast myself. Also uninstall Mcafee security scan plus. I would like for you to post a log that combofix produces but doesn't show you. Navigate to C:\Qoobox and in that folder will be a file named add-remove programs.txt Open that file and copy and paste the contents back here.

Ok, I redid the entire scan after removing all of my anti-rvirus programs except for norton. Here are the Add-Remove Program Logs:

Also note: After running these scans, the registry file dxkxn is gone, even though none of the logs seem to indicate that Combofix edited it :?

Yes, combofix did remove a remnant of it. Look here.

Code:

AddRemove-PunkBusterSvc - c:\windows\system32\pbsvc.exe

combofix log looks good. It wouldn't hurt to run an online virus scan.

Please download and run the ESET Online Scanner
Disable any antivirus/security programs.
IMPORTANT! UN-check Remove found threats
Accept any security warnings from your browser.
Check Scan archives
Click Start
ESET will then download updates, install and then start scanning your system.
When the scan is done, push list of found threats
Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a file name, such as ESETlog. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
If no threats are found then it won't produce a log.

I guess that's it then, atleast that's as much as we/I can do for now until more info on this virus comes out. I'd like to thank the both of you for you time and your help :D
