Virus scan over crossover cable

Is it possible to do things such as scan for viruses, spyware, and even defragment a computer from another computer via a crossover cable, using one computer to fix the other? I have to clean up several computers for friends, and i don't want to have to take their hard drives out and connect them to my computer, nor do i want to install and uninstall several pieces of software on each of the computers. I'm looking for the simplest way to fix their computers using my computer.
 
If you shared their C drive you could do it over a network. Might be slow if wireless.... But it will work. I don't think you will be able to defrag... Try setting it as a network drive and doing it.
