Ok I have just been infected with the worst virus ever. The computer killing virus. When it happened a bunch of wierd files started appearing on my desktop and in certain folders. I quickly restarted and my computer cant get past the boot screen. It just says windows is missing file <windows root>\system32\hal.dll

I think im s**t out of luck here, it was an older computer at least not my good one. But does anyone have any ideas on if there is anyone to fix this? I cant get to my frikken desktop!

you do have a back up disk right? just pop that in and reinstall windows

no i dont unfortunetly. when I boot up it says this

Please select the operating system to start:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Microsoft Windows Xp Professional Setep

If I do the top choice I get the hal.dll error

If I do the second choice I get

INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 14.
Setup cannot continue. press any key to exit...

You're just missing your HAL, run a recovery and you should be set.

SOMETIMES this works :
For the Hal.dll file missing problem do this:
1.Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
2.At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
3.Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
4.Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file
5.Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it
6.Type exit and take out the CD ROM

The problem is the BOOT.INI file on the root of the C: drive is misconfigured.

But if not, just do the repair install...

It's actually a common problem. Probably not a virus, it has just gone corrupt.

ok I tried using a bootdisk but I get this error at the end

STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error
\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll

still cant boot into windows this is bull!

is there anyway I can do some sort of system recovery to a past date without getting into windows with a disk or something???
