Don't know if I am in the right forum.

I ran a scan on my computer this weekend and Norton said that I had an adware threat. It would not fix the threat as my subscription ran out and being as I am no longer on the internet at home, I did not renew it. Listed below is what it found.

c:\program files\online services\peoplepc\utilities\atlbrowser.exe is a adware threat.

the file version is 5.5.0.6 and the company is People PC

It also said.

File Name Threat Name Action Status
DC12.Exe Adware.exe adware found at risk

What is People PC? I have other files by people pc listed below.

Navwarn
ppc runonce module
raswait
ppcodiag mfc application
Dlocations mfc application

Thanks for your help in advance.

If you did not install it, it probably is adaware. Check in the add/remove programs if you can uninstall it. If you are hesitant to do so, google peoplepc and see what it is. Secondly, if it is not in the uninstall list, get adaware or spybot, between the two, it should pick it up and be able to delete it.

You need to run some scans, download the following to a cd or something (with their respective manual update files, [both Ad-AwareSE and SpyBot have manual update files you can download and use to update the program]) and run the scans as directed below:

1. Disable System Restore (right-click on "My Computer", Properties, System Restore, check Turn off System Restore).

2. Enable viewing of all files/folders (open "My Computer", Tools, Folder Options, View, click "View hidden folders and files" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types").

3. Download CWShredder, VX2finder, Kill2me, and run them. Let them fix what they find. See these links for download:

http://www.pchell.com/downloads/vx2finder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/kill2me.zip

4. Now, download Ad-Aware SE, and SpyBot, (both are free, see links below) install them and update them seperately. Then run a FULL system scan with Ad-Aware, (not the Smart Scan), and check all the items it finds/let it remove them. Run SpyBot and scan, let it remove what it finds. REBOOT your machine and run them again, TAKE NOTE of what items still remain that they couldn't get ride of! Some items will be taken off from a 2nd scan and some items they will NOT be able to remove at all, (Note what those items are).

5. Download AVG antivirus with it's update files, and run a full virus scan as well. Afterwards you will want to decide whether or not to keep AVG or Norton and uninstall one of them.

byteman, i love that template you have about spyware, they should make that required learning in elementary school :)

Actually, if you saw my current temple in it's entirety, I think you would understand how many hours I've spent putting it together, and why I don't like to get too far into spyware/virus problems until people have at least covered the basics. I spend a good 20+ hours a week working on people's computers infected with this stuff, so it comes from first hand experience. A full virus/spyware cleaning ranges anywhere from 2-6hours on an decently infested machine, if you do it right and know what your doing. :)

Yes, virii, spyware, and malware i fully understand. I think it is a great set of written directions that people who use the internet should fully understand. It really does amaze me the amount of people i have come across that have never even heard of spyware, let alone have any idea how to get rid of it. As you and i know, a few simple precautions such as not using IE and the importance of a router, can go a long way. For the people who have no idea, its nice to see an easy to follow written set of instructions as such.
