virus

I think I have the 4dlmng virus. I can't even get Firefox to load (and this is what I usually use and have all my bookmarks on). In google chrome, I keep getting the popup warning, but can't click on it to fix it. I tried system restore and that didn't work and a scan from all my antivirus and pop up blockers can't find it. I found a service on mytechmate blog that says they can remove it for $65. Is this service legit or any other recommendations to try? I have a fairly new computer running Windows 8.1

I'm using Avast free antivirus and ad aware, but I just checked and the ad aware isn't registered so its not active. I also have malaware bytes and AVG and those but say everything is good and up to date. Malaware found a bunch of stuff that I deleted, but it didn't fix the problem. I also noticed I have windows defender on my system, but its turned off I think because I'm using the other anti virus apps and I'm not sure how to turn it back on.

First off, uninstall either Avast or AVG, you can't have both installed at the same time.

Then download and run the following and post the logs.

1.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.

•Please close all open programs and internet browsers.
•Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
•Click on Scan.
•After the scan you will need to click on clean for it to delete the adware.
•Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
•Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
•You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

2.

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

•Shutdown your antivirus to avoid any conflicts.
•Very important that you run the tool in this manner:
Right-mouse click JRT.exe and select Run as administrator
Do NOT just double-click it.
•The tool will open and start scanning your system.
•Please be patient as this can take a while to complete.
•On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
•Post the contents of JRT.txt in your next message.

3.

Download OTL to your Desktop

•Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
•Click on Minimal Output at the top
•Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
◦When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL. Just post the OTL.txt file in your reply.

So in your original thread asking for help, please give us a short description of what the problem is and then post the logs from the following 4 programs.

1. Adwcleaner
2. Junkware removal tool
3. OTL

thanks for the advice. I won't have time right now, but when you are saying to post the contents of the logfile in your reply of each app, you mean on here right? But I should first delete either Avast or AVG and disable the rest when running these programs (by going to task manager and end process?)

Yes, post each log from those programs in your reply, create multiple replies if they won't fit into one. Uninstall either Avast or AVG so you only have 1 installed, I would recommend keeping Avast. There is no need to go to task manager to end tasks. Just make sure you don't have any programs open on the desktop/taskbar is all.

Ok, I just booted up and was about to try your steps but noticed I've been on for awhile and haven't got the virus detected popup yet. I still can't get on firefox, but after looking at my downloads noticed I must have installed a new version of it on Saturday and that's when my problems started. Its called the firefox setup stub 28.0 exe. Could this be the problem and can I uninstall it to go back to an older version before I try the above steps? I still can't find the virus I thought I had anywhere on my system although spyhunter said I had over 2000 issues, but they want you to purchase it to fix them and I don't know if it is legit either.

Spy hunter is junk, uninstall it. Also please run the programs I mentioned, every computer will have some sort of malware on it. Then post the logs. Firefox latest version is 28 I believe, so that should be a valid file.

Thanks for the advice. I just downloaded and run the adwcleaner app and it appears to have found the viruses! It only found a couple things, but after a reboot I can now get on firefox. It looks like it reinstalled it (without the weird search engine in the search field I had before), but it saved my bookmarks. Should I still download and use the other two programs?

No it didn't reinstall firefox. It just removed the crap add ons from your browsers. I highly recommend continuing the scans and post the logs.
