I need help, my friend has emachines 130 (about five years old) with a maxtor 20 gig hard drive which had four bad sectors that had corrupted.and wouldn't boot because pci.sys corrupt but I copied that my pc and it worked. However I'm now in much deeper water and I have theree main problems:

- The start bar refuses to show all the recent applications.
- Control panel will not switch to classic view (not a security thing because I have recently rebuilt it)
- F secure is gone from the taskbar but I'm still bieng told it's out of date by window security centre.

Is this the hard drive playing up or a virus?

What version of Windows is currently running on the system there? XP? Depending on how that copy of Windows has been running it may be time to reformat or replace the drive itself. The problems there sound more like corrupted system files causing this. If you have XP running and have the installation disk you could try a repair install method described in an article seen at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
