vista 32 vs 64 vs xp

hi guys i have a quick question :
i had a gift from my brother a laptop with the vista 32 bit , could i install the vista 64 or i won't work ? does the softwares must be specialized for the 64 bit or all 32 bit will work under vista 64 bit an vice versa ? and about xp softwares does will they worrk under vista 32 or 64 ?
any info ....

Your HARDWARE must support 64-bit technology in order to use 64-bit software. (Like mine - AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+)

Give us the specs of the laptop and we can help you more. (There is no real improvement in 64 than 32 - just the ability to use more than 4GB of RAM)

Is that 100% true? Are there any disadvantages you're aware of?

Yeh thats true and there are some disadvantages like finding drivers for some programs but the support for vista 64 is alot better than it is for xp64 so most things have an available 64 bit driver, still unless you have more than 3gb of ram in your pc i would not bother going to vista64 bit.
