Vista and WMP11 problem

Hopefully someone will have a solution to this, as I have looked everywhere! A few days ago I was downloading a few vids from Ign.com (wmv files), went to play them on media player 11 and had sound but no picture. I thought to myself, "No problem, I'll just uninstall and reinstall it". Then found out there is no way of uninstalling it as it’s built into the OS, thanks Microsoft!!! The other thing is when it comes to ripping music, the mp3 format has disappeared. All this worked the day before. I think the only thing I did was to get rid of a few tracking cookies and I don't think that would have anything to do with it, it just stopped working. Has anyone had the same problem?

Don't you just love Vista's Program + Features that replaces the old add/remove and add/remove Windows components options! Try removing anything like the Media Center after you click on the setup MC link in the Programs menu.

Besides a system restore point being used to go back a week or so you are left with the repair install option until some real methods of repair are found in the new version. The main reason why Vista is seen as a slowdown for gamers is now everything auto loads with Windows since they are incorporated into the new Windows unlike previous versions.

The first thing here is to install a good player like Cyberlink's PowerDVD that also plays audio files and runs a screensaver during playback. That's one player that sees far less problems and uses less resources then WMP. The last thought is to run the system file checker by typing "sfc /scannow" in at the Run prompt with the installation disk in the drive. That will first verify system files before repair or replacement of any of them. Sometimes this can help with what used to be optional programs like WMP in case something else was damaged or now found missing.

Yea, Vista's program + features are just great! Hopefully when service pack 1 is available most of these issues will be resolved, but I'm not gona hold my breath. Had tried "sfc /scannow" but that did not fix the problem. Will try Cyberlink's PowerDVD, I think I had a free copy of it with my MOBO. No doubt my copy will not be compatible with Vista, lol. Thanks for the reply anyway, much appreciated.

I may have seen PowerDVD 6 install onto Vista here. But I can't confirm that until the replacement board comes in for the new build here. I'm presently using the old build just cleaned up as a gift for someone else with XP Pro only. Don't be surprised by a need to get a newer version of any Cyberlink or other manufacturer's software for Vista. It's all too common whenever a new version of Windows comes out. Games do better there.
