I can't disconnect as the warranty sticker is still on the back and it doesnt run out until june - but they wanted £90 to collect it and return it.
That sucks. Who wanted £90 to collect and return it? I've never seen a warranty like that - usually you can just take it to the place you purchased it from and they'll fix it for free. But it might be best to go ahead and do what you have to do to get this repaired while it is still under warranty.
You did unplug everything else that you could, leaving only a PS/2 mouse and keyboard, right? Is there any way to turn off all of the other drives in BIOS?
someone said to swap the AHCI? But I don't know how to. It doesnt allow me to change SATA to Compatable.
What options do you have under SATA? And you don't have any option to disable AHCI in your BIOS
anywhere? What BIOS version are you using? Also, what is the make/model of his computer, and how long has he had it? I don't know why you would need to do that all of a sudden - the computer used to work fine right? When did this start happening? Was any hardware/software installled before it crashed?
Any ideas? I booted this morning normally and it got to the black screen with the cursor after windows loads, so I thought I would pop the Vista disk back in and go for a repair - but its still not reading the hard drive.
I don't understand why Repair is not seeing the drive - I mean, if it begins to load Windows it's obviously seeing the HDD there... What do you mean exactly when you say it's "not reading the hard drive" I'm thinking that the HDD may be bad or going bad.
At this point, I would boot the computer using a Linux Live-CD such as
Knoppix and see if it is able to access the HDD. If so, I would back up all of your Dad's important files from the HDD. Then, depending on your computers make/model, I would do a System Recovery (from the Recovery partition) or do a complete format and reinstall Windows. (Or would that void your warranty too?)
