If it's an OEM machine, like a Dell, HP, etc.. then you can use the factory recovery disks, if you have them. Anything else, you'll have to find the correct key or purchase a new key (or disk). Microsoft won't give you a new one with that story, although I suppose you could try to call them. You said the key is on the PC, so that leads me to believe that you can obtain or create recovery disks for your machine.

If its an OEM computer such as Dell, HP, Gateway, you will need to call them to see if they can help you. If it was custom built you will need to possibly call microsoft or whoever built it for you and tell them you can't read the key off the side of the case.

If you still have the old hard drive and can boot into windows, you can use software to retrieve the key such as magic jelly bean keyfinder.

Microsoft Windows Vista
1 Click Start and then click Control Panel.
2 In the Category View, click System and Maintenance, and then click System. In the Classic View, double-click System.
3 Under the Windows Activation section of the page, the Product ID (PID) is a 20 digit number next to Product ID.
Ya ,that is with good HD...

You may be able to call Microsoft, give them the product ID and they may activate it. I'm not sure if they'll do it but it's worth a shot. Do you have a retail or system builders copy of Vista? Usually the key is on the box or the envelope that came with the disk.

Another idea: Boot the PC with the old mobo and hard drive. Use magic jelly bean to retrieve the key. That's assuming the mobo and hard drive aren't damaged.

I just called the Microsoft, they asked for Part number on the CD, I gave them and they give me new key code. That was easy! :good:
