vista defender pro

Hi everyone.

I have a virus on my computer that's disguising itself as "vista defender pro." Without being prompted by me, the virus initiates fake virus scans, gives fake results of fake infections, then recommends I purchase a full version of defender pro through the software's website. Obviously, it's a scam designed to steal people's money, so I ignore the option of purchasing a "full version." However, ignoring the scam is not enough, as vista defender pro has practically taken over my whole computer. I can't access the internet at all anymore, and defender pro is always present on my task bar. It constantly bombards me with fake virus scans and fake warnings about how infected my computer is.

Anyway, I've had this problem for two days now, and I can't figure out how to get rid of it. I've tried several methods, including ones which entailed I download and install "malwarebytes" (malwarebytes found nothing after repeated scans).

Please help.

Are you sure MalwareBytes was updated?

Right now I'm gonna say download and run HijackThis! I'll wait for John to say to run ComboFix

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces log

Even though malwarebytes has cleaned up your current issue it may not have gotten everything. You may want to post a hijackthis log so we can make sure your pc is clean.

Hello, please download and post a log with HiJackThis.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
