vista desktop icons not there?

I'm new to vista. I'm having a problem with my icons on my desktop. When I log on the icons will show sometimes and other times they aren't there. When I logged on right now they were there for a split second and then disapeared.

Is this a setting within vista?

It would appear to be a hide setting. Alrgough i dont know where to find it it is a setting that hides unused icons.

Hmm i right clicked on the desktop and the show icons option was checked. I unchecked it and then rechecked it and they all showed up
