Vista install and mobo switching

Synesthesia

Ok, my mobo self destructed around a month ago after shipping it, inside of my computer to my new address. It was a P5N-D. I could just buy a new P5N-D, but I am worried that it will f**k up again (this is the 3d time it has failed). So I was considering buying a new mobo. The only problem besides needing to change my ram is the OS. I have been told that I have to reinstall my OS if I use a new motherboard, is this true? Can I do a sort of repair install my current OS to make it work while still retaining all of my program directories? When I built this computer originally, I had to go through a hellish process of creating new directories for EVERY SINGLE FILE AND PROGRAM. This took me a month to do. I REALLY do not want to do his again. I would have to do this If I were to install the new OS on my secondary HD and make it my main. I am pretty sure that every file on the other HD would require new directories and location assignments. So, can I keep everything the way it is and upgrade to a new motherboard?

Its better to do a clean install, but yes you can just do a repair install. Its still a good idea to uninstall all the drivers from the old board before you swap out. Changing the board out you might have to reactivate it. Just tell them it burned out.

What are the detriments behind doing a repair install?

I might as well upgrade while I'm at it ;)....though I heard that a new Intel chipset is coming out soon. Should I wait another month and see what comes out?

DAMNIT! The new architecture uses a new processor and a different ram type then my own. I guess I will not be upgrading to it ; ( Replacing all of that is just too much money.
