I'm working on a Toshiba Satelite L300 and have came across the following:
I first recieved it as it wouldn't start up, and i diagnosed a HDD failure.
I replaced the HDD and inserted the vista disc to do a fresh install and at about 85-90% i get this:-

Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer.

This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-Rom drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected then restart your computer.

If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer.

Status: 0xc00000e9
Info: an unexpected I/O error has occured

Since then i have replaced the RAM and the optical drive, i have nothing attached to it like usb gizmos.
When i try to install XP i get the same equivalent error, only ending '7b'.

Please help as i'm at a complete loss.

Thank you

Looks like there is still some sort of hardware failure, however, are you using a genuine vista install cd or a burned copy?
