I just finished building my new rig, 64 bit Q6600 intel processor, 64 bit compatible mobo (nforce 780i), and windows vista 64 bit ultimate system builders edition.

So the computer boots up, recognizes all my memory, processor, HDD and video card. All the tempertures are fine in the BIOS, all default BIOS settings. I boot from my vista ultimate 64 bit disc, it formats the drive, finishes install just fine, and restarts.

I go to the windows loading page, then I get a BSOD for a split second and it restarts. I go to the screen that lets me choose startup mode, and no matter which I choose I get the same thing, BSOD for a split second and the computer restarts.:(:( Help plz!

Hard to tell just from this, could you press the pause key when it BSOD's then write down the error code (if its got one)?

EDIT: Have had a hunt about and found someone with the same sort of problem. They had 3GB of RAM installed, they fixed the problem be reinstalling the OS with only 2GB of RAM installed. Can't see how this fixed it but worth a shot?

Question / Issue

I get frequent BSOD crashes when installing or running Windows Vista 64 bit and I have over 3GB of RAM.

Answer / Solution

Please download the below hotfix from Microsoft that addresses this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777/en-us

If you are having BSOD's while installing, please install with 2GB of RAM installed, apply patch, then add the other 2GB of system RAM.

I googled it and found many different people were having the same problem for a variety of reasons. Some said it was the SATA HDD, others said it was video card and some said it was dual channel memory. So I started swapping out pieces from my old system. IDE HDD, same result, old video card, same result. Finally on my last hope, I popped in 2 gigs of single channel RAM, booted like a champ and finished installation. I ordered 2 more gigs of identical RAM, hopefully it will support 4 gigs of single channel ram, ill be disappointed if Im stuck with 2 GIGs. Crysis looks awesome, but its way too choppy with only 2 gigs.

if u put a even number or chips in it will be duel channel but now that it is installed an been booted it should work fine
