Vista networking sucks

Hello,
i'm trying to set up an ICS with Vista being the host and XP MCE the client, it's a one client only network...anyway, i've tried everything and for some reason i still can't browse the internet from the client...

here's what i did so far:
checked the workgroup has the same name
assigned IPs to both computers
no router, one inverted network cable
the LAN on the host is set to "share internet"
and i checked the obvious hardware stuff

the thing is, i already had an ICS up and running on 2 different computers but XP was the host....
so any ideas??

Let me start off by saying I do not run Vista.

Now, I have done some research on vista - xp networks. XP hates vista. Vista wants to change the settings on the xp machine, making the xp machine very unhappy.

There are hundreds of posts on the internet about this problem. I never saw anyone with an answer.
