Vista on old systems

Could vista be installed on an overclocked i486(~166Mhz) with 256MB EDO SIMM RAM (I think that is the max), 20GB harddrive (could be lager if you had it), CD/DVD-ROM drive? I'm talking about a rocking old system!

I know win9x can, what about ME, win2k, XP?

Just because 98 is not supported anymore, doesn't mean you can't use it... ME is junk alright, I second that. XP... that's not gonna be a pleasant experience. Vista? That won't do even for a joke. I'd say 98, but 2k should do alright.

Vista will run on it,But it would take days to boot lol and when it eventualy does boot it would probably crash :D

for that system i would put put either windows 2000 pro or a Distro of Linux :)

2000 is better.
Right now Vista Lags on some P4 with 512mb even if they are "certified for windows Vista" . I've seen it.

9x and Vista are way different in terms of technology ;)

My neighbour bought a Brand new Compaq Celeron W/512mb/Vista Home Basic...EVERYTHING is slow on it...I doubled the ram...somewhat better. Thank God he only uses it for email. I would not recommend Vista for any machine with less than 1gb RAM and a decent cpu.

suprisingly Vista ran fine on my old machine,Sempron 2ghz,1.25gb of ram 9600 pro. :D

even aero worked :D

Indeed, Vista was fine on my old PC also (Sempron 64 3100+ 1.8GHz with 1GB RAM and GeForce 6200LE).

i had the old Socket A sempron lol...not even 64 bit.

currently its in my sisters room, retired from countless hours of warrock.

it now does word and paint....nothing to stressfull:D

Home Premium Runs good on my HTPC, P4 1.7Ghz - 512MB ram - 40GB Disk - GF2 MX 400

Doesn't so well on the 600Mhz Celeron - 384MB Ram - 20GB disk - It booted, but that was about it :D

So I'm gonna tell Gramps that he needs even more memory and a gamer level video card so he can check email and play solitaire?

uh? iwouldnt exactly call a Radeon 9600 a gaming card, maybe back in the 90s yeah lol :D

6200LE would be fine i suppose ;)

I guess really my question is would vista actualy install at all. Then could it turn on and run with out crashing.

It won't work, it requires 2gb of ram realistically, and I think it physically needs 1 gig just to run, not just to make it run well. If you got loads of ram in that computer then maybe, but not 256mb.

XP might run, was XP not just a more developed and more compatible version of 2000?

Are you saying you've got a 486 at 166mhz? That's fairly heavy going is it not?! I thought the fastest 486s went to about 80mhz? My 'out of this world mega expensive' pentium was 166mhz, with its unheard of 32mb ram!

H E (double hockey sticks) NO! It won't even do well on a Pentium 4!
You will blow a crater with a 50-mile radius if you try that! Where do you live, so that way I can plan to evacuate:)

YOU WILL BLOW YOUR PROCESSOR UP SO BAD, you probably will craterize everything in a 50-mile radius:)
