I just installed a Q9400 into a vista home premium 32bit system. BIOS recognized the quad, windows system recognized the quad, cpu-z did too.

BUT in task manager it only shows 2 cores under "performance".

Whats going on?

Thanks.

nevermind. it recognizes it now. i reset to optimized defaults in the bios.

idk why that worked, but it did so im not complaining.

EDIT: And i think youre talking about XP

You learn something new everyday. Thanks for the information.

Does anyone know if Windows Vista Basic only recognize dual-core and single-core processors?

Vista basic recognizes an unlimited amount of CPU cores providing its on 1 CPU, just like Home Premium. The only hardware limits I know of is that Basic only supports 8GB of RAM in x64 edition.

This laptop im typing on is running Vista basic with a dual-core processor.

Windows 2000 and up all see quad cores, guess they can see a 12 core if they made them. XP home can only use a single processor, but can see as many cores as it has.
