vista or xp for me?

Hello all,

I'm brand new to this site and would like your advice. I'm about to purchase a new computer from an online vendor and I can't decide which operating system to go with. I have XP pro right now on my current system and can navigate pretty well and I am pretty happy with it. On my new one I was considering getting Vista Home Premium since Vista is Direct X10 compatible and all that and I am looking forward to playing alot of the games that are coming out later this year. (the new pc will have a DX10 comp. card)

My question is how long is XP going to be relevant and how hard would it be for me to switch from XP to Vista later on? I've never installed (or un-installed) an operating system before. As a pc-rookie should I just get Vista now and wait for patches and updates to come out? I know Vista's kinda glitchy at this point...

Thanks for any insight you can give me
Bif

BTW- here's some rough specs of the new system if that helps

Q6600
800w
asus 680i
8800gts(640)
4gb@667
150gb raptor
320bg wd
Dvd/rwx2

I'll bet money since you're giving us "rough specs" you won't end up with 4GBs of RAM. At least, I hope you don't waste your money on that much.

Stick with XP for now and switch to Vista only when you have to.

For $100 more than 2 gb? Why not?

Because a 32bit version will not recognize that much ram and you would just be wasting your money. Although that may not be intirely true cause my dad was running a 32bit version of windows on his 64bit machine and he got it to recognize 4g of ram, but that may be because he has a 64bit machine. He also had to edit some stuff in the OS to make it work. I'm not quite sure on what it was, but it added a new option to the boot menu. I'm pretty sure you can have up to 3g of ram on a standard 32bit machine and that would probably be more than enough for your needs. If you really want that much ram just go with a 64bit machine. It'll cost you alot more than you would waste on that ram.
