Well Im a little under a week into using Vista so heres my unbiased (Im a journalist, its our code :D) report on using Windows Vista.

Ive come from a background where I generally chose to use Windows as my main OS, Ive dabbled in Linux (Ubuntu Studio was my fav by far) but always came back to windows in the end. So heres my Vista lowdown:

First off, A huge compliment goes to Vista for the absolute easiest OS install of all time! everything is down in a windows-like environment and is very very easy. My biggest compliment is the easy OS install.

I was generally displeased with Vista's lack of a real startup screen, this is nit-picking but its nice to see something interesting that says 'hey, thanks for giving us a lot of money for this software' when I turn on my computer. I've read that this can be changed, but I would have enjoyed having a nice startup (or splash) screen by default, again, thats nitpicking

Visually, Vista has made some significant strides in the way it presets itself. The sidebar is an unnecessary yet useful tool. Personally, the RSS feed is nice since as a journalist I find myself checking a lot of feeds. The analog clock is stupid but I suppose if your really into analog clocks its your kinda thing. The other 'gadgets' all sort of baffle me because they do a whole lot of nothing (maybe someone can point me in the direction of some more interesting gadgets?)

I enjoy the background visuals that dreamscenes offer although I keep asking myself why something that simple was not included in versions other than Ultimate, seems goofy to me.

Enough about visuals though

My computer is a new build and my biggest concern obviously was finding hardware drivers and whether or not my older software would run correctly on Vista. Thus far, I have had no trouble getting my main software programs (Photoshop CS2, Flash Professional 8, Macromedia Dreamweaver) up and running. Even the software for my Kensington Tracball installed correctly despite being told otherwise by some. All in all I have yet to run into any software incompatibilities or problems.

Im sure it will get said over and over again on here and that is Vista is a resource hog! and I agree but also add that if you install the most readable amount of ram into your computer (3.25 gigs for Vista 32-bit?) your not going to have much problem. Ive got 3 gigs installed and Vista sees all 3 although when running the system resources sidebar tool (another stupid tool really for the sidebar) clocks me using about a full gig of ram when Im doing absolutely nothing! Thats pretty intense, but Ive never pushed anything past 2 gigs when doing normal software work. So resources are high, get more ram and you wont have problems!

Other concerns I have is with office 2007 which I absolutely loathe but I wont get into that here but blame it on Vista anyway for making more confusing than it ever needed to be ever.

so heres a quick breakdown of my thoughts:

pros:
-Cool interface, very fancy if you like flashy lights and colors (oooh colors)
-If coming from XP background, generally easy to pick up some of the new tools and quirks Vista introduces.
-No problems with software or drivers (Heard this is not the case for non-Ultimate?)
-EASIEST installation of an OS ever!

cons:
- I dont like the sidebar that much, its kinda dumb so I turned it off.
- Resource HOG!
- No splash screen by default
- Annoying security measures (are you sure you want to do this? messages) after any decisions...even opening programs or installing them... freaking annoying.
- Pricey to get Vista Ultimate which is the recomended version.

In the end is Vista necesarry? No not really. If your getting a new computer go ahead and get it because eventually everything will be Vista anyway...eventually. It all comes down to preference. I wouldnt knock it or bitch about it until you've actually used it a played around with it for a while though. Dont get convinced by 12 year old fanboys that it sucks simply because they so so. There is a lot of potential, but it feels generally like it was rushed a little bit and theres some kinks that will hopefully get fixed when SP1 rolls around.

If you don't mind me asking who do you write for? I have always wanted to write technical reviews and how to documents, possibly some other technical writing on the side. I know that if I ever go back to school, it won't be for technology, it would be for something like Journalism. I do enjoy writing a lot, and have been interviewed by a few magazines. However, in my opinion, professional technology writers and bloggers are writers first, and technology people second. I can't tell you how many fluff articles I have read, or how some writers just write misinformation, or bad information about technology. One of the writers that interviewed about implementing Macs into your enterprise network called boot camp an emulator.

Anyways, if you don't mind you can PM me or we could start a new thread, I don't want to hijack this one.

And for Vista, I think all of you know where I stand with Vista. Totally not worth the cost of the upgrade for eye candy, because that is the only difference from windows XP. Plus it is a resource hog and has compatibility issues, not to mention vienna is slated for a 2009 release date. Doesn't that sound a bit fishy?

FYI, Control Panel/ Classic view/ User Account/ Turn User Account Control Off

;)

yea and while ur in there u can get rid of the red x if u hate it like I do by changing the way it alerts you but that will turn off all security alerts
