I am building a gaming system soon and am getting Vista Ultimate. Should I get 64bit or 32bit and what is the difference here between the two Operation Systems? Thanks

[price difference is $20 on Newegg.com]

from what i understand you will want the 64 as long as you have a 64 bit processor, vista runs better on the faster version and processor the 32 is for older 32 bit processors and if you are running a 32 you should stick with xp as it was designed for 32 bit processors

Definitely 64bit, it runs faster, smoother and better than the 32bit and also, has more support for software, as not only does it only run 32bit programs, it runs 64bit programs as well.

Go with 64, you are limited to using 3.5gb of Ram, if you have 4gb and are using 32.

This doesn't make sense. I do not know what message you are trying to state, please be more clear. Thank you.

As for the other posts, I am planning on getting a 64bit processor so I think the Vista Ultimate 64 will be right for me.

Is this true that there is a limitation on RAM amount if you have a certain type processor? Thanks..

He's saying that the 32-bit OS can only use (or recognize) up to 3.5 gigs of RAM. The 64-bit OS overcomes this problem and is therefor suitable for systems with 4 gigs of Ram and above.

Well, as I was saying it depends on OS, but I do believe that you need a 64-bit processor to run 64-bit OS, so it's indirectly true.

go with 64bit, its newer, better, and more advanced. if the prices are so close, why go with the older version? IMO they shouldn't even have released a 32bit version of vista. you don't get people to advance/upgrade by supporting outdated technology.

That's partly true, the problem is there's still alot of 32-bit applications, infact most of Vista's (and espacially XP) built-in programs run 32-bit, 64-bit emulated, so completely missing to advantages of 64-bit.

Not that 32-bit can't run on 64-bit, it's just not alot of software utilizes 64-bit just yet.

then again, 64-bit is the OS of the future and will eventually become the next big "thing"...

Also, with a 64-bit OS, you are immune to 32-bit viruses.

Where did you hear that? Since 64-bit OS can still run 32-bit software...

Sorry to butt in here, but does that mean that using 64 bit would cause compatibility issues with playing current/older PC games?

Possibly, but 64-bit OS can emulate 32-bit environment (I think it's similar to XP that has that windows 98, 95, MS DOS compatibility thing).

I'm not 100% certain however, I haven't done much research on 64-bit OS, just from what I know as of now...

I knew that you could not possibly mix a 32bit chip with a 64bit OS and vice versa. I wanted to know about the RAM limitation for 32bit chips/OSs. Thank you.

I think in the long run I am going to get Vista Ultimate. I forgot about the DirectX10 factor. I will be getting a directx10 GPU so I guess I need vista. Thanks guys.

I this OS information should be in the CPU 101. I used the search function to find the information I was looking for, but it shoud be added to the 101. That way you potentialy answer the question without even having to search.

I read it from the 'Computer Shopper' Magazine.
