If I transfer over some programs and installation stuff, disks and files, that work perfectly on my WinXP MCE 05, will they work just as fine on vista?

Thaaanks

SURPRISE! You are dealing with a totally different and newer version of Windows. There are going to be a number of things that will no longer run. Don't be surprised to see that happen. Another surprise is actually seeing older 98-ME, XP games running on Vista. For mp3s and other media files those should run as they did on XP in WMP 11.

Other desktop applications on the other hand will often require a wait for a newer Vista ready version. At this time it's more "trial and error" to see what does and doesn't. Even the Vista compatiility lists seen at the link are way off at times. :( http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_Software_Compatibility_List

i didn't have any compatability problems with vista

it's a SLOW o/s, tho

i'd stick with MCE2005, it's based one pro 2003, it's a good os

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....
I realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly was looking forward to vista.

But I dont want compatibility issues.

so go for it

borrow someone else's disc, and install it, that will give you 30 days to try it before you have to buy it......

easy solution

the discs have all the versions on them, too

Well...
I dont want compatibility issues. So MCE may be good.
I also dont want to be slow, Mce takes the win...
Want to try vista...Eh....

But reallly want to use vista.

Slow. What will lag?

do a ghost of your current install

then if you dont like vista, restore it

just do it!

it was too slow for me, but im running utorrent @ 5mbps 24 hours a day, and running 3 monitors, and multithreaded file decompression tools on top of that, let alone managing 4 hard drives, and a network from this computer

if youre just using it for general purposes and gaming, you may have an altogether different experience.

I ask on my friends behalf, I attracted to vista, since he has it on his laptop. And he downloads torrents... Iam telling him, from what i was told, vista can track you, if you illegally download...But he says they cant.

But, I would like to well prove him wrong lol.
Do we know?

no way to know, except monitor your outgoing traffic.....

and even then, its not like their ip address is mic.ros.oft.0

but look at this screen shot i took a few days ago of how much hard drive and network traffic vista had going on my computer, while i was doing NOTHING.

Theres no telling what the hell its up to, its CONSTANTLY scanning files, receiving packets, sending packets............ I hated it.

BTW, the blue line on the disc activity plot is my 2nd hard drive, which has my movies/music on it.

It was accessing it for some reason?

the discs have all the versions on them, too

DAAAAAAANT! Each installation has only "one" version on it. You can upgrade by downloading or buy a disk for each separate version.

Well...
I dont want compatibility issues. So MCE may be good.

Most of the people with complaints about Vista only ran the beta versions which were only intended for evaluation not gaming and other things. There are always compatibility for each new version of Windows that comes out. Some programs that came out shortly after XP's release with support for 98-ME are likely to have problems. PowerDVD 6.0 seen on the compatibility lists won't run. Yet a good number of pc games even older are running ok.

Torrents themselves arent illegal, so if Microsoft sees that you have a torrent program running, they cant do anything about it.

Also, they really dont care about the individual who downloads an illegal program here and there, they care about the people that are downloading and uploading tons of torrents each day, to make a profit or something.
